Why Yemanja?: Our Yemanja candle represents Orixa music, originating from Yoruba religion in West Africa. Over time, Yoruba would evolve into Candomblé in Brazil (where we take our spellings from) and Santería in Cuba. On the Continent, Yemanja is the Orixa of rivers and fresh water, whereas in Brazil and Cuba she is revered as the mother of the oceans. In all instances, Yemanja is major, mighty, a protector, motherly, strong, and feminine. While we could have chosen any number of Orixas for our Genres Collection, we ultimately chose Yemanja because of her connection to water, and because of the linkages between water and the Black Diaspora. We cannot wait to share more about the music, culture, foods, symbols and rituals associated with this music.
