Production Manager (Part-time)

Bright Black uses scent as an artistic medium and candles as a platform to share positive stories about Blackness. Our small, passionate, hard-working, fun, and fast-growing team is looking to hire a Production Manager to support production at our Durham, NC-based facility. In just over a year, Bright Black has collaborated with numerous partners, including Michelle Obama and Jordan Peele/HBO, and has been featured in over 60 media outlets including Beyonce’s Black Parade, Vogue, People, NPR and Durham Magazine. Now, we’re looking to expand our team with a candidate who has a passion for artisanship, community, and sharing the beauty and brilliance of Black people, culture, and history.


Your Role:

*The Production Manager is an on-site role with the primary responsibility of handcrafting small batch, high-quality candles. The ideal candidate will be able to balance pace and accuracy, in an effort to hit daily target production and quality goals. This position is part-time, but may evolve into a full-time role in the future. The Production Manager will work directly with the Bright Black COO and Production Team Associates.

*Additionally, the Production Manager will engage in packaging, unloading supplies from delivery trucks, and quality assurance, all in a safe, clean, and comfortable work environment. This position is part-time but may evolve into a full-time role over time. Specific hours will be determined in partnership with the chosen applicant based on both parties’ needs. 

 

Your Responsibilities:

*Handcraft Bright Black candles using company tools, including wax melter, labelers, etc.

*Engage in candle finishing including, final wick trimming, ensuring all surfaces of candles are smooth, lidding, etc. 

*Problem solve throughout the production process including identifying issues, brainstorming and implementing solutions, and documenting the effectiveness of implemented solutions. 

*Support shipping activities including packaging finished candles for fulfillment.

*Assist with inventory management.

*Support teammates as needed.

*Receive freight and materials, and deliver final products to our storage area. 

*Maintain a clean, neat, safe and orderly work area. 

*Perform other duties, as requested. 

*Uphold highest standards of artisanship. 

 

An Ideal Candidate Will:

*Be punctual, responsible, highly organized, meticulous about details and the accuracy of production, and get excited about boosting production efficiency. 

*Have at least 1-3 years experience working on a production line, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to work hard, at pace, and carefully on a team.

*Be professional, including dependable with respect to schedule and completed work. 

*Adhere to all safety protocols. 

*Be self-directed, but comfortable with asking questions and open to taking directions.

*Be consistent, yet adaptable.

*Provide a strong work history that demonstrates integrity and a strong work ethic.

*Demonstrate creative problem-solving skills, a curious mind, willingness to learn and grow, positivity, and strong verbal and written communication skills. 

*Be in alignment with the Bright Black mission, vision, and values.

*Be over 18 years of age. 

*Previous candle making experience is a plus, but not required. We are willing to train the candidate upon hire.

 

Job Requirements:

*Ability to stand or walk for 6-8 hours a day.

*Ability to lift 20-50 lbs. throughout the day.
